Sammie Colvin Obituary

Sammie G. Colvin, 77, of Hobbs, New Mexico, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and loved ones on December 3, 2025.

Mr. Colvin was born on November 11, 1948, to Jessie Colvin and Willie Hales in Warren, Arkansas.

After graduating from Medford High School in Medford, Oregon, Sammie began his hardworking career at a local sawmill before venturing north to Alaska, where he worked on the Alaska Pipeline for five years. His strong work ethic and adventurous spirit later brought him to Hobbs, New Mexico, where he worked in the oilfield for several years. In 1987, Sammie married the love of his life, Josephine Herrera, at the Candlelight Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Together they built a full and blessed life. In 1988, Sammie followed his passion for hands-on work and opened a mechanic shop. Later, combining his love of the outdoors and business sense, he founded J & S Tree Farm in Hobbs after purchasing a tree farm in Lovington, which grew into a thriving nursery and landscape business that has served the community for the past 30 years.

Sammie is survived by his son, David Colvin, and daughter, Christi Colvin, both of Sarasota, Florida; and four stepchildren: Ronnie Fuller of Hobbs, Katherine and Jose Medrano of Clovis, Patricia and Mac Wright of Hobbs, and Kristina and Chris Sturguess of Seminole, Texas. He leaves behind eight grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren who will cherish his memory and the lessons he passed down through his life of hard work, love, and perseverance.

Sammie loved spending time outdoors with his children and grandchildren. His Adventurous spirit led him to enjoy snowmobiling and inner tubing in the mountains, fishing, camping, four-wheeling, and off-road jeeping through the mountains of Colorado, where some of his favorite memories were made. Many of these trips were spent meeting fellow outdoor enthusiasts from across the United States. He also spent time camping along the beaches of Oregon, where his love for nature and family came together.

A celebration of Sammie’s life will be held at New Creation Apostolic Center, 620 N. Coleman, Hobbs, New Mexico, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Committal burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Friends and loved ones are invited to join the family in remembering a man who dedicated his life to faith, family, and community.
